1st of February every year is the World Hijab Day. First marked in 2013, The World Hijab Day is a big idea by Nazma Khan, a New York immigrants from Bangladesh who experience a lot of humiliation and discrimination as the only Hijabi in middle school. She came up with the idea “as a means to foster religious tolerance and understanding by inviting women (non-Hijabi Muslims/non-Muslims) to experience the hijab for one day.
Endorsed by notable people around the world, many of the endorsers most especially non-Muslims believes it as an opportunity to stop discriminating women who wear hijab and opportunity to learn about the Islamic culture. Not only that, women anywhere around the world have the right to choose what the want to wear.
Inviting sisters in humanity of ALL faiths/backgrounds to wear the #hijab (headscarf) for a day on February 1st, 2018 in solidarity with #Muslim #women around the world. Join us on #WorldHijabDay and show the world that we are #StrongInHijab. pic.twitter.com/DA33qZn4zv— World HijabDay (@WorldHijabDay) 29 December 2017
What is Hijab?
In an Arabic word, Hijab means Covering or partition. The meaning and Interpretation of Hijab is very wide, but looking at some verses to simply as related to the general meaning people understand
“Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.” - Q24:30
“And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.” Q24:31

Is World Hijab Day Bid’ah (Innovation)?
This question was answered by Mufti Ismail Menk on the World Hijab Day website. He is of the opinion that calling WHD a bid’ah is like judging without looking at the global perspective. He says “We cannot base global ideas only on our own situation. We must deeply consider what is happening to others too. Hijab is being banned in a growing number of places. People are misinformed regarding hijab. Democracies may soon vote to ban it based on majority view. This had happened in some places. We need to educate them. If we don’t educate them we will be guilty of allowing misconceptions to grow without doing anything meaningful to educate and create positive awareness.” A sentence to answered the question from him is that “Bid’ah is the last word to be used”
