On this
occasion of the International Youth Day (IYD)2018,
I specially congratulate all members of NASFAT Youth
Wing Worldwide and the entire youths of the world. Today is an opportunity to
celebrate together the enthusiasm, creativity and energy of youth.
The theme for
this year's IYD is "Safe Spaces for Youths." Indeed, the
importance of this theme and its timeliness cannot be overemphasized.
As the
Secretary General of the United Nations highlighted in his message for the 2018
International Youth Day: "The world’s
young people need safe spaces; public, civic, physical and digital spaces where
they can freely express their views and pursue their dreams."
It is a fact
that in our society today, millions of youths face deprivation, harassment,
bullying and other infringements of their rights. Young women and girls are
particularly vulnerable.
Whereas the
hopes of the world rest on the youths as the largest generation in history, yet
the opportunities for young people to engage politically, economically and
socially are limited especially in our part of the world. It is therefore
essential to give the youth the right tools to
express their opinions and unlock their potentials. I equally implore we the
youths to effectively utilize our spaces for the betterment of the society.
Youths should not be used as instrument of violence during elections. Vote, not
fight. Get your PVC and vote for credible candidates of your choice.
It is my
sincere hope that our leaders invest more in the youths so that young people
have access to education, training and decent jobs to achieve their full
potentials. This is even more important because it is only by tapping into the
power of youths that our society can witness peace, economic dynamism, social
justice, tolerance etc. today and always.
Thus, when we give youth Safe spaces, they can play their full part in building stronger and more inclusive communities.
Thus, when we give youth Safe spaces, they can play their full part in building stronger and more inclusive communities.
“In making the
world safe for young people, we make the world better for all.”
I wish you all
a happy International Youth Day!
