The most
important pillar of Islam that keep us being a Muslim and reviving our spirituality
after the Kalimatul shahadah: Ash'hadu An La ilaha
illa Allah wa hada'u La sharikala la'u, wa ash'hadu anna Muhammad abduhu wa
rasul. (I testify that there is no God except Allah alone, and i testify that
Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.) is the five (5) daily prayers. The truth
is that we all know how difficult it is for many Muslims before we start
talking of the third pillar of Islam; Zakat and Sadaqat. This is the need for
an institute that will not only remind and collect but also ensure best
management and distribution of the resources collected. This is the idea behind
the birth of Zakat & Sadaqat Foundation (ZSF) in the year 2000.

Allah
says: “Take sadaqat (alms) from their wealth in order to purity them and
sanctify them with it, and invoke Allah for them. Verily your invocations are a
source of security for them: and Allah is All Hearer, All Knower Quran 9
verse 103.
To
the beneficiaries;
“Allah says: Zakat expenditures are only
for the poor and the needy and for those employed to collect (Zakat) and for
bringing hearts together (for Islam) and for freeing the captives (or slaves)
and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for (stranded) traveler –
an obligation (imposed) by Allah. And Allah is knowing and wise. Quran 9
verse 60.
Assessment, Collection and Distribution of Zakat
The
orientation people have about paying zakat is poor thinking they don’t earn
enough to pay zakat regularly. But Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation is doing great
job on this and has being able to reach not less than 10,000 Muslims out of
which over 1,000 people were assessed and found qualified to pay their Zakat.
As gathered on
their website, in the years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 the total Zakat
collected were N.5m, N1.5m, N3m, 12.5m and 15.8m respectively. The recent Zakat
collected and distributed was carried out in the year 2012 and the amount was
N35.4m. The Foundation recorded an increment of over 100% Zakat Collection and
distribution in late 2007 and early 2008. Also there was slight increase in
2009 and it has significantly increased till date.
