SIDDIQAH: The Voice of the Unheard

In Islam, Zakat and Sadaqat is one of the economic principles to redistribute income in other to help the less privileged. Unfortunate, people focus on the negative rather than paying attention to the positive side about the “Religion of Peace” that will not only benefit them personally but also their community and the nation at large.

One thing I knew with certainty is that every Islamic principle as commanded by Almighty Allah is for the benefit of us not Him. Why then do we prefer hardship as a result of our stubbornness and selfishness?

Sometimes last year (2017), I have being reading about “The Street Kitchen” via social media and just yesterday (January 19, 2018) my attention was called to it again with the title:

Less Than 24 Hours, N850,000 Is Left To Make Street Kitchen 11.0 Happen

It was about her January 2018 project with a budget of N1,000,000 (One million Naira), but as at 19^th of January, they are still over 80% behind budget.

The January budget is about feeding and empowering people within Makoko in Lagos and Oja Oba in Ibadan. As gathered on their facebook page, one of the people that will be empowered during the January project is a beneficiary who requested for a help from Ibadan.

The question now is that, since they are still N850,000 behind budget, can they make it happen? I said yes, they could, if you and me is ready to help. A thousand naira (N1,000) via a mobile money transfer or street banking (Paga et al) could go a long way. Let’s do it together.

“SIDDIQAH: the voice of the unheard! Is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in Lagos, Nigeria which was born out of the need to help the challenged women (widows, divorcee and single mothers) and needy children in our society.

Those women challenged or in need due to an unavoidable process of divorce or death of husband and those little ones that suffer the consequences of these situations. At Siddiqah, we aim to address these concerns through a 3 pronged approach:

Support System

1.   Discouraging divorce through counseling: We approach issues between spouses through a reconciliation process at our first contact, offering confidential helplines dedicated to listening and helping to proffer realistic solutions to the challenges faced. We move to the next stage after trying at every stage to reach reconciliation and having come to the realization that the situation is irrevocable.

2.   Psychological therapy: We provide psychological therapy for these women through social & mental wellness workshops and in an extreme case recommend a medical therapy with our medical team.

3.   Short term financial relief: Siddiqah offers a short-term financial help to the needy women either for themselves or their child/children or both as the need required.

4.     Offer assistance in remarriage process: At Siddiqah we believe NO one should be left to pass through the challenges of life on their own, for this reason we encourage the women towards a re-marriage process.

Enlightening/Empowerment

1.      Financial empowerment through mentoring, skill acquisition workshops, CV/Resume workshops, Recruitment advice and money management training.

2.      Opportunities to socialise, de-stress and network through planned ladies-only pamper evenings and tea parties.

Public health

1.   Provision of public health services and advice through workshops, delivery of monthly personalised emails to subscribers, regular post updates and confidential helplines dedicated to all.

2.   Rescue Assistance/Disaster Relief – We offer solace and a helping hand in case of disaster whether natural occurrence or man-made. Siddiqah intervenes in crisis situation and manages different kind of disaster.

We believe that these are some of the pressing issues affecting women worldwide and it is our mission to provide as much help as we can to make the journey much easier. We are guided in the light of Qur’an & Sunnah of The Prophet (sallaahu alayhi wassalam).

Achievement So Far

They have the mission of feeding 200 people monthly and between 2000-3000 by the end of 2017 but at the end, their achievement was wow! as they are able to fed 19,834 people in their first year of operation.
